Learnability Improvement of Digital Financial Services for Financial Inclusion in Pakistan

Hamid Mehmood

Recently, governments in developing as well emerging countries have started eagerly looking to unlock the economic and social potential of the people belonging to the bottom-of-the-pyramid through greater Financial Inclusion (FI). Financial Inclusion is closely linked to a country’s economic and social development and is also considered as an important mean to alleviate poverty and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Branchless banking is one of the most effective FI platform that provides financial services to the under-resourced communities. Keeping in view the huge mobile penetration in developing countries, Point-Of-Sale (POS) terminals and mobile phones are the most viable mechanisms for branchless banking. Like many other developing countries, mobile wallets have been introduced in Pakistan for low-literate and low-income communities. However, uptake of these mobile wallets is quite nominal as compared to the mobile phone penetration in these communities. Various factors, e.g., network downtime, agent liquidity issue, complex user interface, frauds and inadequate data privacy etc. are believed to be contributing to this low uptake of these mobile wallets.Following the principles of Human Computer Interaction and ICTD we are working to improve the learnability of these mobile wallets. We are working on various technical interventions like reducing the cognitive load from the interfaces, introducing In-Device Training modules and making the application intelligent and adaptive to make these applications usable for the people with lower education and income levels.

Pneumonia Detection and Digital Stethoscope

Aaira Suhail, Iqra Shahzad, Sheryar Zahid & Syed M.Hassan

Pneumonia is among the leading causes of death in children of age 5 and below. Detection of these diseases is an issue in underserved communities that lack basic infrastructure and experienced doctors. Hence we are working on designing a digital stethoscope and an interactive application for patients so that they can detect pneumonia themselves. Digital stethoscope will include a microphone to capture the sound signals of heart and lungs. The audio male jack of the stethoscope will be injected in the female audio jack of a Smartphone. Smartphone based android application will take all the sounds as input, send it to server where we analyzed the signal either by interpreting the signal or comparing it with the existing database of signal and the result will be send and shown on the application screen. We will be using MatLab for sound amplification and signal processing. We will also be taking input of blood test and other physical examination which includes fever and cough input.

Anemia Detection Using Non-invasive Way

Mohabbat Ali, Saud Raza, Anas Khalid & Moazzam Shoukat

Mobile phones are being used widely in the field of medical science and getting good attention from the past few years, because of the improvements in the mobile phone devices and also, because of their lower price. Also, people have the opportunity to program them in a way that they can produce good results for medical scientific problems. In our project we focus on using smartphones camera tom detect anemia, which manifests as redness of conjunctiva. Although a degree of anemia is common in mothers, detection of anemia in early stages can help mothers to focus on their health at the time of birth else it can damage the health of the mother or child. So we present a noninvasive method through which we can take pictures of the conjunctiva of mothers and let them focus on their health by providing them a report on their health condition. We will do analysis on their conjunctiva image and provide them with the results.

GPS Based Blood Bank

Usama Bhatti, Fouzia Younas & Amina Anwaar

This project is being undertaken to remove the gap between blood donors and the people who need it in case of emergency. The system is used for maintaining all the process and activities of blood bank. This is a research cum development project. Although there exist such systems but they are not too active to satisfy patient’s needs in their desperate time. So there is a dire need to build such platform. The project is commenced on 25th September 2016 and will complete no later than June 2017.Upon completion, it will meet the goals and objectives that we have mentioned in above section. Stakeholders for our project includes doctors, patients, students, blood bank staff/hospital staff, and general public. Our application will keep 1- Data of donors and recipients 2- Mandatory medical tests information 3- Blood groups information 4-Online medical consultant about donating blood. The system can be extended to be used for maintaining records of hospitals of different cities, organ donation and other similar sectors. While developing the Application, there will be space for further modification. There will be a proper documentation so that further enhancement becomes easy.
